This guide walks you step-by-step through setting up your Ledger device (Nano S / Nano X / Nano S Plus). Follow each step carefully. Hardware wallets store your private keys offline — that’s the strongest protection against online theft. Take your time, and keep your recovery phrase private.
Unbox & verify your device
Open the package and make sure the seal is intact. Ledger ships devices in tamper-evident packaging. If the packaging looks opened, contact the retailer or Ledger support — do not use the device.
Power on & choose a PIN
Plug your Ledger into your computer or phone. Follow on-device prompts to choose a PIN code (4–8 digits). Memorize it — do not store the PIN online or in photos. If you forget the PIN, you'll need the recovery phrase to restore your wallet.
Write down your recovery phrase
The device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (sometimes 12 or 18 depending on the model). Write every word in order on the provided recovery sheet. This is the only backup of your private keys — anyone with these words controls your crypto. Store the sheet securely offline.
Confirm the recovery phrase
The device will ask you to confirm words from the phrase. This ensures you recorded it correctly. If you make a mistake, restart the process to secure a valid backup.
Install Ledger Live
On your computer or smartphone, download Ledger Live from ledger.com/ledger-live. Ledger Live is the official companion app used to add apps, check balances, and perform transactions. Always download from the official site.
Connect device & add accounts
Open Ledger Live, follow the onboarding prompts, and install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you plan to use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Then add accounts inside Ledger Live — the device will derive the addresses for you securely.
Receive a small test transfer
Before sending large amounts, try a small test transaction to confirm everything is working. Verify the receiving address on the hardware device screen — never trust an address shown only in software.
Keep software & firmware updated
Periodically update Ledger Live and your device's firmware when prompted. Firmware updates patch bugs and strengthen security. Only install updates when your device shows an official, on-screen confirmation.
- Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone.
- Only download apps and firmware from ledger.com or Ledger Live.
- Keep your recovery sheet offline (no photos, no cloud).
- Use a secure, private location when setting up the device.
- Consider a metal backup plate for disaster resilience.
Troubleshooting & advanced tips
Try a different USB port or cable, and ensure Ledger Live is up-to-date. On phones, use a compatible OTG cable and enable Bluetooth only for Nano X if necessary.
If you enter the wrong PIN multiple times the device will reset. Restore the wallet using your recovery phrase in Ledger Live or on another compatible device. That's why secure backup is critical.
If you suspect compromise, immediately transfer assets to a new wallet whose recovery phrase you control. Do this from a secure device and never reuse exposed words.
